ECB holds its key rate at 2.5% as Lagarde sets a February departure
The rate decision and leadership announcement are separate developments. Energy prices still complicate the inflation outlook.
The European Central Bank left its deposit facility rate at 2.5% on Thursday, CNBC and Reuters reported, while warning that higher energy prices threaten inflation and growth. The pause follows a quarter-point rate increase in September.
Separately, the ECB announced that President Christine Lagarde will step down on February 7, 2027. The official statement says she informed the Governing Council and European Council President António Costa. A leadership announcement is not itself a change to the current policy rate.
Inflation risk meets tighter financing
CNBC and Reuters reported the bank's warning that rising energy prices pose upside risks to inflation and downside risks to growth. Underlying inflation has remained broadly stable so far, and wages have not shown a material response, according to the statement quoted by both outlets.
The ECB also said financing conditions had tightened since its previous meeting. That can restrain activity even when the central bank leaves its own rate unchanged. A pause therefore does not establish that borrowing conditions are getting easier.
Euro-area headline inflation reached 3.8% in September, CNBC and Reuters reported. Keeping the rate unchanged does not mean the inflation problem is solved, or that the bank has committed to its next move.
A successor is still to be appointed
The ECB says the European Council will appoint Lagarde's successor under the nomination process in Article 283 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. Its announcement does not name a replacement or give a reason for her departure. Speculation about either is separate from the confirmed transition date.
For investors following both sides of the Atlantic, today's European pause comes after the Federal Reserve's hold on Wednesday. Similar decisions do not make the two economies or their future rate paths interchangeable.
