Lilly lifts its sales outlook, but deal charges lower the final profit range
Mounjaro and Zepbound helped drive a 39% revenue increase. The full-year earnings guidance needs a closer look.
Eli Lilly raised its full-year sales outlook after reporting third-quarter revenue of $24.4 billion, up 39% from a year earlier. Demand for Mounjaro and Zepbound drove the growth, according to the company release and CNBC. But the stronger sales outlook did not translate into a higher final adjusted earnings-per-share range.
Lilly now expects 2026 revenue of $91 billion to $92 billion, compared with its previous range of $85 billion to $87 billion. Third-quarter earnings were $7.22 per share on a reported basis and $7.48 on a non-GAAP basis. CNBC said the adjusted result exceeded the $6.26 forecast in LSEG's analyst survey.
Why the profit guidance looks different
The updated full-year non-GAAP earnings range is $35 to $36 per share, down from $35.50 to $36.50. Lilly said improved underlying performance added $4.07 per share at the midpoint, but $4.57 per share of acquired in-process research and development charges more than offset that improvement. CNBC also reported that distinction.
Those charges are included in both the reported and non-GAAP third-quarter earnings figures. Calling a measure adjusted does not mean it excludes every acquisition-related cost. The final range and the underlying business explanation answer different questions.
Not every revenue dollar has the same source
The quarter included about $900 million of benefits, primarily $410 million of Jardiance milestone payments and favorable adjustments to rebate and discount estimates. Lilly said no further Jardiance milestones remain. Reuters also reported those benefits.
That does not erase the growth in the business, but it matters when judging how much of a quarter can repeat. Guidance remains management's forecast, not revenue or profit already earned.
For the broader economic setting, our GDP and PCE report separates stronger growth from still-firm inflation. Lilly's company-specific results are a different piece of that day's market picture.
