Samsung Electronics shares closed 4.13% lower in Seoul on Thursday despite record quarterly results, as investors waited for more detail about additional shareholder returns. CNBC and The Korea Times reported the same closing decline and the company's third-quarter dividend announcement.

The company reported operating profit of 107.4 trillion won on revenue of 195.3 trillion won for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, using the rounded figures in its own earnings release. Strong demand for AI-related memory chips supported the semiconductor business. These are company-wide operating profit and revenue figures, not net profit or cash available for immediate distribution.

Samsung approved 30 trillion won in third-quarter cash dividends. Of estimated total shareholder returns of 90 trillion to 110 trillion won for 2026, Samsung said 35 trillion won was already planned or completed, leaving an anticipated 55 trillion to 75 trillion won. That remaining amount is part of the annual return estimate, not another quarterly dividend. The final amount and execution plans, including share repurchases and cancellations alongside cash dividends, are due to be finalized at a board meeting in late January 2027. Samsung's own earnings release states those amounts and that timetable; CNBC and The Korea Times also reported them. An announced dividend and a future decision about further returns are different commitments; the latter should not be described as already paid.

The reaction shows why record earnings do not guarantee a rising share price. Both reports described investor disappointment over the lack of additional payout detail. That is a reported explanation of Thursday's response, not proof that every investor sold for the same reason. The broader overnight context is in today's First Light market report.
