Iran says seven oil tankers damaged in Strait of Hormuz overnight
State television reported the tankers were struck by attacks or hit naval mines, possibly the largest single-day toll in the waterway since the war began.
Iran’s state television reported Thursday that seven oil tankers caught fire and were damaged overnight in the Strait of Hormuz after being targeted or striking naval mines.
The Revolutionary Guard’s navy said four vessels it accused of illegal oil transfers in the northern Persian Gulf were hit and caught fire after its forces tracked them, and that three more vessels struck mines. Iran also warned the United States of a wider response to any further attacks, according to the reports.
The reported toll may be the largest single-day number of vessels damaged in the waterway since the Iran war began on February 28, the Associated Press reported. The claims had not been independently verified. Oil prices have climbed as attacks threatened supply, with Brent crude topping $112, its highest since May.
