U.S. stocks climbed at midday Monday, with the S&P 500 up about 0.9% as of 10:55 AM ET, the Nasdaq 100 gaining 1.3% and the Dow up about 0.5%, as Anthropic's IPO filing kept the artificial-intelligence trade in focus. Tesla rose about 6% after Barclays upgraded the stock, citing the potential for a merger with SpaceX and telling clients to buy ahead of a deal. Europe's Stoxx 600 added 0.8%.

Oil extended its retreat as regional officials traveled to Tehran in a bid to defuse the conflict: Brent crude fell about 1.4% to roughly $115 a barrel and U.S. benchmark crude dropped about 2.3% to around $100.95. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note eased two basis points to 4.98%. More in our oil story.

Brazil's selloff deepened after the morning's circuit breaker, the first since 2020: the Ibovespa resumed trading down more than 17% and was recently off about 15.8% at roughly 172,700 points, while the dollar surged more than 9% against the real to about R$5.46, after touching R$5.60 earlier. J.P. Morgan cut its recommendations on the real and local rates to marketweight from overweight after the vote.
