Anthropic secures $3.4 billion generator deal for AI data centers, FT reports
The reported purchase covers 1.7 gigawatts of generator commitments, not an acquisition of supplier OnePWR or power already running.
Anthropic has agreed to spend about $3.4 billion on gas-fired generators for data centers, the Financial Times reported Sunday. The Claude developer bought commitments for 1.7 gigawatts of heavy-duty generators from Texas-based equipment supplier OnePWR Solutions in late September.
The transaction is for equipment commitments, not the purchase of OnePWR itself. The report said no employees transferred to Anthropic, while the agreement included engineering and construction capabilities needed to install the generators.
Power equipment becomes part of the AI race
The FT said Anthropic initially planned to buy power from OnePWR, then instead took over generator orders the supplier had placed with Caterpillar. Securing equipment directly gives the AI company a different route to the electricity its data centers need.
A generator commitment is not the same as operating capacity. The reported 1.7-gigawatt total describes the equipment covered by the deal; it does not show that those generators are installed, connected or supplying power today.
What to watch next
The news puts equipment delivery, installation and the timing of available power alongside chips and computing capacity as things to watch in the AI buildout. It follows Anthropic's disclosure of much larger future computing and infrastructure commitments.
The deal remains a reported transaction rather than a company-confirmed announcement. Reuters said it could not independently verify the FT report and that Anthropic and OnePWR had not responded to its requests for comment.
